Halloween 🎃 but make it community over costume | Good Things Ahead
Good Things at a Glance: Quick summary for the busy leader
Costumes bring courage. Open doors invite generosity. Superheroes are everywhere. And end-of-year giving is your chance to keep showing up, one doorstep at a time.
Halloween, but make it community over costumes
It’s already Friday afternoon here on the East Coast — and, of course, it's also Halloween. For many working parents this means racing from work mode to costume designer, with a little extra energy (and sugar) in the air.
Somewhere in the chaos of the season, it hit me: Halloween may look like candy and capes, but for nonprofit leaders, it’s really about generosity, courage, and connection.
Here me out...
👻 Costumes bring dreams to life — just like fundraising.
When a child puts on a superhero cape, they don’t suddenly become stronger — they simply believe they are. Fundraising works the same way. You already have what you need — your story, your mission, your impact — you’re just giving others a vision to believe in, too.
🍬 It’s a night of open doors and unexpected generosity.
Think about it: strangers give freely — no strings attached — simply because someone showed up and asked. Fundraising is your invitation to knock, connect, and remind people how good it feels to give.
🦸♀️ You’re surrounded by superheroes.
Every donor, volunteer, and board member wears their own version of a cape. Sometimes it’s a checkbook, sometimes a clipboard, sometimes a casserole dish. All are part of the good work being done.
🌙 It’s a seasonal reminder.
As the pumpkins fade, we’re reminded that the end of the year is near — and with it, the biggest opportunity to re-ignite generosity, gratitude, and impact.
✨ And maybe the sweetest truth of all:
Halloween reminds us that community is built one doorstep at a time. So keep showing up, costume and all — because generosity begins with the simple act of being present.
Lessons from Halloween: What to Do Next
1️⃣ Knock on a few doors.
Reach out to three donors or partners just to check in — no ask, just appreciation.
2️⃣ Shine your story.
Take a moment to find a recent "mission moment" that you can share with others over the next few months.
3️⃣ Spot your superheroes.
Send a short note or voice message to someone who’s carried a little extra weight lately — your encouragement might be the treat they need most.
Friend, maybe the invitation this Halloween is simple: Be present. Be kind. Be brave enough to keep knocking.
Because even now — especially now — there are good things ahead.
